My name is Ryan.
I am a medical student who put her studies on hold for a year of cultural immersion in Chile. Otherwise I am a spontaneous and open-minded and hungry space-cadet who loves running, hiking, ultimate frisbee, reading, listening to music, and drinking coffee.
Why do this?
The Professional answer = earn fluency in Spanish for my patients and conduct research in reproductive health.
The Personal answer = earn fluency in a language I've tried for over a decade to master, travel to beautiful places, wrap myself in new perspectives, and gift myself time to reconnect with who I am.
Why a blog? I needed a safe place to reflect thoughts about my work, to explore the positives, to confront my bias, to vent about the nittygritties, to accumulate a dictionary of new vocabulary. I decided a blog would be a solid medium for self-expression.
Why "The Gata Gringa"? I am currently living with a wonderful family and 2 cats named Dominga and Julieta. Dominga shares time with me when I sunbathe and read outside. I appreciate the "otherness" that she and I have in common. The Gata Gringa (American cat) is for her should she read this one day.
