  • hueon/hueona (abrv: wn/wna) (modismo) = dude
  • cachai (modismo) = understand what i'm saying?/get it?, can also be used at beginning of sentence like "oye!" to get your attention
  • al tiro (modismo) = quickly/"right now"
    • me voy altiro = i'm going!
  • bacan (abrv: bcn) (modismo)= cool/awesome
  • tomar once (modismo) = to have food with friends/family at dinner time, but the food is tea with bread with avocados, tomatoes, and lettuce 
  • tomar colación (modismo) = to have a snack 
  • mañosa (modismo) = whiny, stubborn, crying for no reason (usually describing a child) 
  • pololo/polola (modismo) = boyfriend/girlfriend 
  • recarga  = recharge (a phone) or refill (a prescription)
  • Estar chato/harto/astiado (modismo) = to be tired/done/sick of something
  • cabezona (modismo) = the word you use to order a strong drink with more alcohol
  • suegra = mother-in-law
  • puuuuucha (modismo) = oh well
  • chuuuuuuta (modismo) = dear god!/shit!
  • aleatorio = random
  • regio (modismo) = really beautiful/handsome
  • tiene su genio = to have character
  • delantal = white coat
  • desmontar la montura (very rural modismo) = literally means to take the saddle off the horse, figuratively means to take off all the coats you're wearing because it's freezing
  • burlarse = to make fun of someone
    • No te burles de mi = Don't make fun of me!
  • fome (modismo) = boring 
  • lata (modismo) = boring 
  • volantin = kite
  • hilo = thread 
  • impeque (modismo + company for cleaning supplies) = perfect
  • Pelar = to say bad things about someone else (harsh gossip)
  • bochorno = hot flashes
  • maniado (modismo) = torpe = clumsy
  • sacar las garras (modismo) = literally means to show your claws, figuratively means to be sassy
    • ​Ryan sacó las garras = Wow, Ryan's sassy!
  • cajetilla = box of cigarettes 
  • de repente = suddenly, sometimes
  • mamon (modismo) = mama's boy
  • papitis (modismo) = daddy's girl 
  • apollerado (modismo) = word to describe a child who is always attached to his mother's side, comes from the word "pollera" which means skirt 
  • flaite (modismo) = really awful word to describe a young person from low SES who is into crime, basically our way of calling someone a delinquent aka not nice, never use 
  • echar de menos = to really miss something
  • Cachipun (modismo) = name of chilean game of rock, paper, scissors
  • Adecuado = thats correct
  • ​chomba = pull-over sweater
  • chaleco = zip up sweater
  • chascona (modismo) = to be with messy hair (messy ponytails don't count)
  • acelga = chard
  • de echo = actually (try not to use "actualmente" in conversation-- apparently its weird)
  • atajo = shortcut
  • amanecer = dawn and another way to say "to wake up"
  • gallo (modismo) = this guy (not nice)
  • lolo/lola (old modismo) = joven = youth (nice)
  • quatico (modismo) = awesome and weird and emotionally heavy 
  • cálido = tibio = warm
  • hacer caso (modismo?) = to follow directions, used often to discuss adherence to medication
  • pataletas (modismo) = temper-tantrum 
  • mala leche (modismo) = an appropriate response to a story about someone's inconsiderate behavior, sort of like "there's something in the water" 
  • medio pique = long distance
    • ​I told my host mom, Veronica, that I was running a few km and she exclaimed "Oooo medio pique!" 
  • esta guateando = you're messing up/flailing/vacillating
