You must be wearing slippers or shoes in the house at all times to avoid weird looks.
When I arrived to Talca, I was given my own pair of already worn-in grandma pantuflas! Instead, I am often caught walking around the house barefoot or in my calcetines (socks), which leads to weird looks and scoldings (Ryan! Pantuflas!!) about how I'll get catch a cold through my feet or track dust into my bed at night. My parents had to Skype in barefoot/socks to show my host family that my barefooted shame is an innocent familial trait that I inherited.
